Lion’s mane mushroom

The origin of Lion’s mane mushroom

Hericium erinaceus grows in the forests of Europe, North America, and Asia, most often under old deciduous trees such as oak, walnut, beech, maple, and sycamore. The large, white-coloured mushroom is often called the lion’s mane mushroom because of its distinctive appearance. In Asian countries (e.g. China, Japan, and Korea), the mushroom and its effects are very popular, being used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It is a tasty and healthy food, low in fat, predominantly unsaturated fatty acids, and relatively high in protein. It can be eaten raw, cooked, dried, or as a tea, and its extract is also known as an ingredient in valuable medicinal preparations and dietary supplements.

Hericium erinaceus, nature's nutrient for the nervous system

Although consuming Lion’s mane mushrooms has several health advantages, their positive impact on the neurological system is the most well-known. Due to its capacity to promote the production of nerve growth factors (NFG), this delicious fungus has rightfully been praised as nature’s food for nerve cells. Why is it this crucial? The normal operation of the central and peripheral nervous systems depends on NFG.

Did you know that low levels of NFG have been linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia? These diseases are mostly associated with the gradual deterioration and death of nerve cells, which the body is unfortunately unable to rebuild on its own.

The regular consumption of Hericium erinaceus extract can contribute to the protection of nerve cells in a preventive way, thus helping to prevent neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, etc.). By promoting the regeneration of damaged nerves, the fungus has a potential therapeutic effect in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Thanks to its neuroprotective properties, it can improve brain function, cognitive function, and memory, as well as alleviate anxiety and depression. Research has also shown that regular consumption of Hericium erinaceus can be an excellent remedy for the unpleasant symptoms of menopause (e.g. anxiety, hot flushes, sleep disturbances).

Additional health benefits of Hericium erinaceus

Fight disease and cancer with Lion’s mane mushroom

Polysaccharides have been shown to stimulate the body’s immune response, making it more resistant to viruses, infections, and various pathogens. By strengthening the immune system, they contribute to the destruction of cancer cells and help fight cancer. It is also an effective anti-inflammatory, which can help prevent and treat many inflammatory diseases.

For a healthy stomach and intestines

Hericium erinaceus has antibacterial properties and can kill bad bacteria that multiply in the intestines, thus helping to prevent the development of intestinal diseases and strengthen the immune system. Its antibacterial properties also make it an excellent tool in the fight against stomach ulcers.

What causes stomach ulcers? Ulcers are open sores that develop on the inner wall of the stomach or small intestine. They most often develop from a bacterial infection caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. In recent years, numerous studies have investigated and supported the anti-ulcer effects of Lion’s mane mushroom, which is extremely effective in killing Helicobacter pylori and in protecting the stomach lining.

Medicinal mushroom for a healthy heart

Hericium erinaceus also has antioxidant properties and can lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, thus preventing the development of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Stabilising blood sugar levels is of paramount importance for health maintenance, as persistently elevated blood sugar can lead to several health complications, such as an increased risk of atherosclerosis and reduced blood supply to the heart.
